Sleeping in a hotel room can be tough. I’ve found a great way to relax and fall asleep to the scent of lavender tucked into my pillow case. Lavender is said to be a great natural remedy for calming nerves and helping to ease you into a sound sleep and the scent is wonderful! This is why a few hotels give out lavender spray upon check-in.

Get your very own lavender sachet at Zen’s Purple Garden. Slip it inside your pillow case and feel the sense of calm when your head hits the pillow. Upon waking, scrunch it up and place it back in its travel-safe container. Use it again and again and again. It’s now part of my travel must-have’s. You’ll want to use it at home as well.

Each day have them take a 4”x6” or so piece of paper and draw a picture about something they did. If they’re old enough, have them write a few sentences on what they learned or what fun they had. Have them address it to mom and draw a stamp on it like it’s a postcard. They can add these ‘postcards’ to the pile of mail that’s awaiting your return.

Ever have to cram clothes from one bag into another to avoid overweight baggage fees? Don’t you hate doing this on the airport floor with people walking all around you? Now know the weight of your luggage before you get to the airport check-in counter!

Check out the Balanzza Digital Luggage Scale. It weighs 10 oz. and can weigh up to 100 pound bags. Other frequent fliers have found this digital luggage scale to be very accurate. Allow for a 2 lb margin of error as the airline scale may differ.

You can also weigh your luggage on your home scale before you depart on your trip. Trouble is, your bag may be under the weight limit upon departure but they you buy lots of stuff during your travels. A 40 lb bag can quickly become an over-50 lb bag! In this case, the digital luggage scale is your answer!

Even though I have flown more than 1.5 million miles, I am always learning something new about travel. This week’s lesson came from a source close to home.

My husband flew from Orlando to Los Angeles this week. He was on the upgrade list for First Class and was #1 on this list. Unfortunately there were zero open seats left. Before boarding his coach seat, he asked the gate agent for a ‘better’ seat in coach. He was moved back several rows from his original seat, where no one was in the middle seat, so he had more room to spread out. He thought he’d be in great shape for his 5-hour flight.

He was excited to connect to the internet with a free GoGo Inflight code and he got busy sending me messages from 30,000 feet up. Then the tone of the messages got more and more frustrated as his laptop battery went down and down. He had a great GoGo connection and no juice to take advantage of it. Two hours into the flight and the laptop died.

A quick check with SeatGuru and his internet time would have lasted the entire flight.

Here’s why you want to use SeatGuru before you fly:

SeatGuru shows you which seats have power outlets.

Guess what? Had my husband stayed in his originally-assigned coach seat, he would have had a power outlet! One of the flight attendants gave him this bit of frustrating news.

Here’s how SeatGuru shows which seats have power outlets:

Notice the black dots between the front-most coach seats and not all of coach? Ah, had he know!?!?!?

SeatGuru tells you the best seats to try to get. Here’s their key to the great level of detail they have:

Wouldn’t it be great to score a Good Seat and end up with extra leg room or one that has a power outlet? This is much better than ending up with a Poor Seat that you unknowingly selected (or was given to you by the airline).

The vast details that SeatGuru provides can mean the difference between a very enjoyable flight and one where you swear you’ll never fly again. Frequent travelers swear by SeatGuru.

A few other notes about SeatGuru …

How do you know what type of aircraft you will be on? Check your reservation online with your airline. Your flight number will display. If you do not immediately see the type of aircraft, click on the flight number and you may see further details about your flight. If you cannot find it online, call your airline for assistance.

One person’s ‘poor seat’ may be another person’s ‘good seat.’ Find the seat that you prefer, no matter what the coding indicates. For example: bulkhead seats may often be coded as poor seats if they have limited legroom, but some people prefer bulkhead seats so that someone else’s seatback doesn’t come crashing into their knees. It’s all personal preference.

If a ‘good seat’ isn’t available to select, see my Travel Gem on March 1st to find out the best time to recheck your airline’s website to see if a ‘good seat’ opened up.

For us mobile-phone addicts, you may ask, “Can I access SeatGuru information via my mobile phone?” You bet! Check out SeatGuru’s page on accessing their mobile site at http://www.seatguru.com/articles/mobile_launch.php. They also have a page on iPhone apps: http://www.seatguru.com/articles/iphone_travel_application_reviews.php.

I hope this lesson that my husband and I learned this week helps you in your future flights. Be a well-informed flier and enjoy the seat on your next flight!

Ever feel rushed when reviewing your hotel bill? Here’s a quick way to check hotel or cruise bills for accurate restaurant and other purchases where a gratuity is included: During your stay, adjust the amount of the tips so that each room charge ends with the same digit. For example: Add enough of a tip to end each charge in an odd cent (17.03, 25.43 …. Notice the ‘3’ at the end of each charge). It takes only a moment to scan the bill for items that do not end in ‘3’ and thus may not be your charges. The odds of an mischarged bill ending in this odd number (‘3’ in this example) is low.

Avoid missed flights and getting stuck in a middle seat. Always confirm your flight info the night before your trip – better yet, a few days before. When booking your flight weeks in advance, the departure time may change from what you originally booked. You do not want to arrive at the airport only to find your flight left earlier than you thought.

The plane configuration may also change, resulting in a middle seat that you did not expect! (Tip: many frequent fliers get upgraded into first class in the few days before a flight, so you may have a chance to move out of a middle seat as their coach seats become available.)

Validating your flight a day or more ahead of time gives you a chance to contact the airline online or via telephone to address any seating, timing or other ticket issues.

I like to write in a travel journal to keep track of where I’ve been, who I met, where I stayed and ate and anything else of interest.
